Tenzin’s personal story at Maitreya Home
International Maitreya Foundation
In 2000, Drakpa Rinpoche was seeking help to start a children’s day school for young Tibetans in need in Delhi, India. OFT offered to help and also sought the help of Child Haven International. As a result, the Institute of the Maitreya Foundation Home in New Delhi was founded.
Since then, OFT has been supporting the Maitreya Foundation Home with funds that provide food, shelter, clothing, books and scholarships for tuition, and can boast that its graduates are now productive members of the Tibetan society in exile.
Tenzin, left, came at 11 years old. His father became a single parent when his mother died of tuberculosis and typhoid when he was 3 or 4. Tenzin’s father is a Tibetan refugee, who came to India when he was 10 or 11 after the Chinese invaded Tibet. His father came with his parents. One of his father’s friends told him about the Maitreya Home. Tenzin’s father was a cook, but he couldn’t afford education. Tenzin has 2 sisters. His father was able to educate one of his sisters, and the other one did not want to go to school. With Ottawa Friends contribution to Child Haven support was provided and Tenzin has just passed the 12th Grade in the arts. His studies were difficult in the beginning he says, but they became easier over time. Tenzin is now thinking about doing a computer course. Good luck Tenzin with whatever you do!
