Ottawa Friends of Tibet
Volunteer Job Posting
TREASURER
Ottawa Friends of Tibet (OFT) is a small Canadian charity whose mission is to serve disadvantaged Tibetan children, men and women in India, Nepal and elsewhere, and to increase public awareness and appreciation of Tibetan culture. OFT is entirely run by a volunteer Board of Directors and a cadre of members and volunteers who support the organization in a variety of ways.
OFT is currently recruiting a volunteer Treasurer.
The Treasurer is an officer and member of the OFT Board of Directors. The Treasurer reports to the Board and is responsible for banking, investments, budgeting and financial reporting, including to the Canada Revenue Agency and Corporations Canada. The Treasurer supervises and is supported by a qualified accountant who is responsible for all bookkeeping and accounting. The Treasurer takes part in the planning for fundraising campaigns (2-3 times per year). Finally, the Treasurer attends and reports to a monthly board meeting.
In 2023, OFT adopted and transitioned to the CanadaHelps donor management system (DMS), a data-base system for tracking income and issuing tax receipts. With the support of the Volunteer/Information Technology, the Treasurer is responsible for ensuring that OFT is using the DMS effectively. All other accounting is done on an Excel spreadsheet, but the Board is hoping that the new Treasurer will assist the organization to transition to Quicken or a similar software for financial management.
Qualifications and Competencies
● Required: Formal training or a degree in an accounting or finance-related field
● Required: Written and spoken fluency in English are required.
● Required: Mastery of Excel, Sheets and Quicken or a similar software for financial management
● Familiarity with Canada Revenue Agency guidelines would be an asset.
● Work experience in the not-for-profit sector would be an asset.
Commitment Required
The Treasurer’s responsibilities have been much reduced by the recent addition of an accountant to the team. On average the workload is quite light (1-2 hours per week), but increases to 5-6 hours a week during the annual fundraising campaign (in the fall) and during the CRA reporting period.
